Potential heat wave on the horizon for Kamloops next week

KAMLOOPS — While Kamloops is forecast to reach highs of 30 C over the weekend, even hotter temperatures are expected by the middle of next week.

Environment Canada is forecasting Kamloops to reach a daytime high of 35 C on Wednesday (May 28) and 34 C on Thursday.

While the weather agency is expecting Wednesday to challenge the record daytime high in Kamloops for May 28, Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says Thursday and days beyond are garnering mixed predictions.

“Currently, some models are indicating the heat persists, but a lot of other models are actually indicating that maybe we’re going to see a bit of a cool down after Wednesday,” Sekhon told CFJC Today. “It’s fairly seasonal. On average, Kamloops sees about 2.2 days above 30 C in the month of May.”

Environment Canada issues heat warnings in Kamloops when daytime highs are above 35 C for two consecutive days, with the overnight low in between failing to dip below 18 C. Sekhon notes overnight lows are expected to stay into the mid-teens into the mid-teens in the middle of next week.

Meantime, Environment Canada has tips for beating the heat in Kamloops this weekend and the potential heat wave mid next week.

“The UV index does get pretty high, so we want to slap on that sunscreen, get some shade or maybe avoid the sun between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.,” Sekhon said. “It can often feel like a good idea to jump in the water and cool off a bit but just keep in mind that some waterways are flowing really fast and the current can be quite strong and dangerous.”

Additionally, Sekhon says some water temperatures in the area may still be cold, creating a risk of hypothermia.
