KAMLOOPS — Interior Health is holding multiple measles immunization clinics across the region over the next six weeks, including sessions in Chase and Kamloops.

In an email to CFJC Today, Interior Health says a pair of clinics will be held at the Kamloops Health Centre on 519 Columbia St. on Saturday (May 24) and May 31, both from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents can call 250-851-7300 to book an appointment.

Additionally, a third clinic in Kamloops will take place at the John Tod Centre on 150 Wood St. on Thursday, June 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

In Chase, a clinic will take place at the Chase Health Centre on 825 Thompson Ave. on Saturday, June 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents can call 250-769-3312 to book an appointment there.

There are no confirmed measles cases in the Interior Health region as of publication. However, Dr. Sanaz Vaseghi, a medical health officer for Interior Health, notes that cases have been confirmed in other parts of B.C. and Canada where residents in the Interior may travel to.

“These clinics are intended to raise immunization rates, recognizing two doses of measles vaccine are almost 100 per cent effective in preventing this serious illness and last a lifetime,” Vaseghi said. “Immunizations are the best defence against measles and other infectious diseases. Interior Health encourages individuals of all ages to check their immunization records to see if they are protected against measles, and to get immunized if they are not.”

The health authority warns that measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air. People can pass the virus to others before they show symptoms, and the virus can stay suspended in the air in the room for several hours.

Adults, children and infants can get measles vaccinations for free from their local health centre or some family physicians and nurses and pharmacies. Children over the age of four and adults can get vaccinated at a pharmacy as well.
