Convicted pedophile who was once Interior Health’s top doctor gives up medical license

VANCOUVER — A disgraced former top doctor for Interior Health can no longer practice medicine at all.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. (CPSBC) says Albert de Villiers has voluntarily resigned and surrendered his license, and has agreed not to reapply in B.C. or any other jurisdiction.

The college posted the notification Tuesday (May 20), though the move took effect on May 2.

De Villiers was found guilty of sexual assault involving an underage victim in February of 2023. The conviction related to incidents that took place between 2018 and 2020, when de Villiers lived in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He is now serving a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

A second set of charges against de Villiers resulted in him entering into a peace bond with court-ordered conditions.

Interior Health hired de Villiers as its chief medical officer in August of 2020. He was the face of the health authority from that time until his arrest in June, 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its rationale for asking de Villiers to surrender his license, the college called his conduct “egregious” and his resignation was “appropriate in the circumstances.”
