Business, vehicle break-ins saw big decreases in first quarter of 2025: Kamloops RCMP

KAMLOOPS — The city’s top cop says property crime is on the decline in Kamloops.

In his report to council’s Safety and Security Select Committee Thursday (May 22), Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Jeff Pelley will report an overall 11 per cent decrease in property crime, comparing the first quarter of 2025 to the same time period in 2024.

The decrease is driven by significant decreases in break-and-enters to businesses (down 51 per cent), break-and-enters to vehicles (down 45 per cent) and vehicle thefts (down 28 per cent).

Pelley attributes the declines to the detachment’s strategic emphasis on bringing property crime down.

Not all categories saw decreases, though. Reported break-ins to residences in Kamloops rose by 27 per cent during the first three months of the year.

“We continue to collaborate with local partners, stakeholders and internal teams to ensure our strategies are informed, targeted and reflective of community priorities,” said Pelley in the report. “These efforts demonstrate our continued focus on prevention, enforcement, and supporting a safe, vibrant community.”

Thursday’s committee meeting will also see updates from Protective Services Director Ken Uzeloc and a report on the city’s FireSmart plans.
