KAMLOOPS — BC Housing will be hosting an open house this week connected to its plans to redevelop a number of seniors housing units on Glenfair Drive in Kamloops.

The open house will be held Thursday (May 22) inside the River Ballroom at the Delta Hotel on Victoria Street downtown, and registration is “appreciated.”

“You are welcome to drop in any time between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.,” BC Housing said. “There will be project information on poster boards throughout the space. Representatives from the project team will be present to answer questions one-on-one.”

BC Housing is proposing to rebuild the existing 80 affordable seniors’ homes located at 1100 Glenfair Drive, and it plans to add another 260 units to accommodate a variety of income levels.

“The current buildings are aging and need extensive repairs. BC Housing plans to replace the older buildings with modern, high-quality, and more resilient homes,” it said, in an online portal with information about the project.

“An investment in new affordable housing will benefit the immediate neighbourhood as well as residents of Kamloops for generations to come.”

BC Housing is also planning to build a 40-bed year-round shelter at 1055 Glenfair Drive, which will be operated by The Mustard Seed and geared mainly towards seniors and older adults experiencing homelessness. Those plans were announced in June last year by Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon.

In March, BC Housing and the City of Kamloops also announced plans for a three-storey, 20-unit complex care facility at 1100 Glenfair Drive. The City says that site was chosen owing to its proximity to essential health services, including Royal Inland Hospital.

“While the project is not part of the broader Glenfair redevelopment, which continues to move forward on a separate timeline, it will require earlier demolition of an existing and aging building,” a BC Housing statement said.
