LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. — The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack had to settle for a silver medal after they fell 10-9 to the Okanagan College Coyotes in Sunday’s (May 18) Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) championship game.

Trailing by three runs going into the ninth inning, the WolfPack managed to load the bases but came up just short in the all-B.C. final as they were only able to score two.

Dawson Head picked up the win for the undefeated Coyotes, who went 4-0 at the double elimination tournament, while Cory Lawson earned the save. Keith Manby was credited with the loss for TRU, who finished with a 3-2 record.

Starting TRU pitcher Manny Recchi gave up eight runs (five earned) on ten hits and struck out four batters in 5.1 innings of work. Manby pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts.

The WolfPack trailed 6-0 after five innings and 8-1 after six, before a six-run seventh inning brought them back to within one at Spitz Stadium.

The Coyotes, who were the home team for the championship game, pulled away with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, meaning TRU had to score at least three in the ninth to extend the game.

Nine WolfPack batters scored one run each, as TRU finished with 12 hits to the Coyotes 13.

The WolfPack began the tournament with a 6-4 win over the Victoria Golden Tide Thursday (May 15) evening. They followed that up with an 11-0 drubbing of the top-seeded Fraser Valley Cascades Friday (May 16) afternoon.

The Cascades beat the WolfPack 9-5 on Saturday (May 17) afternoon to hand TRU their only loss of the tournament. The WolfPack got their revenge later that day as they smoked UFV 17-2 to eliminate the Cascades, who were defending champions.

TRU was the fourth seed going into this weekend’s tournament after they finished the CCBC regular season with a 17-14 record. Okanagan College was seeded second as they finished 19-12.

The WolfPack last won the CCBC title in 2009, while the Coyotes last won it in 2022.
