First-ever Thompson-Nicola library app to officially launch Tuesday

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) will officially be launching a new mobile app on Tuesday (May 20) where people will be able to access library services and manage their accounts.

Chief Librarian Judy Moore told the TNRD Board on Thursday (May 15) that the new app, which has been tested by staff for the past several months, “shows terrific promise” in helping the TNRL achieve its goal of making the library more accessible.

“It enables patrons to place holds and renew items right on their phones,” Moore said, noting people will also be able search the entire TNRL catalog.

She also said people will be able to scan a book’s ISBN (International Standard Book Number, the unique bar code on a book) to check whether it is available in the TNRL system.

“I think that’s a really interesting feature,” Moore added.

Developed by UK-based company Solus, which claims to have developed apps for thousands of library systems across six continents, the new TNRL app is already available for both Android and Apple phones.

Moore says the new app will also showcase information about the TNRL and its numerous events and programs, while highlighting some other resources that are offered like e-books and streaming services.

She also said that library information and the highest-used features will be front and centre on the app.

“In the next few months, we will find that our holds notifications will come forward so you’ll receive a notification right to your phone notifying you that your hold is available to pick up,” Moore said.

Moore also said the TNRL anticipates that people will eventually be able to check out library materials using their own phones, though its not clear when that might happen.

“I think that this is a really terrific step forward,” Moore added.
