LYTTON — A heads up to drivers on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Fraser Canyon as there will be an overnight closure in the Lytton-area next week as crews continue to work on repairs following the atmospheric river from Nov. 2021

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit says the highway will be closed at Tank Hill from midnight to 4:00 a.m. Tuesday (May 20) so crews can reposition a crane that is being used to install new girders and deck panels on a new bridge, 14 kilometres east of Lytton.

The highway will be closed for 36 kilometres in both directions between Lytton and Spences Bridge, and check points with information about alternative routes will be set up in both communities.

“The closures will be in place at the intersections of Highway 1 and Highway 12, and Highway 1 and Highway 8,” the Ministry said in a statement.

It says while the Gladwin area and Nicomen River Road will remain accessible to local traffic, all other traffic will be detoured via Highway 12 and Highway 5. Drivers travelling between the Interior and Lower Mainland can also take Highway 3 or Highway 5 as alternative routes.

“Traffic-control guidance will be provided through portable message boards in Lillooet and Ashcroft,” the Ministry added, noting it is working to ensure that emergency vehicles have access while the highway is closed.

Crews are working to build a road bridge over the CPKC rail line at Tank Hill in the Fraser Canyon. Work is expected to wrap up this November, and drivers are being warned to watch for intermittent closures and single lane alternating traffic until then.
