SOUND OFF: Celebrating National Nursing Week

May 14, 2025 | 10:30 AM

NURSES ARE THE BACKBONE of our healthcare system. They don’t just support our physical health, they carry the emotional weight of care with empathy, strength and grace. Their skill, commitment and compassion shape the experiences of patients and families every single day across British Columbia.

This National Nursing Week, from May 12 to 18, we celebrate the theme “Changing Lives: Shaping Tomorrow,” an acknowledgment of the power nurses holds to transform health care and build stronger, healthier communities.

As a registered nurse for over 25 years, it has been the honor of my life to serve in this role, working across British Columbia in hospitals, rural communities, long-term care homes and community health settings. I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most dedicated, selfless and courageous people I have ever known; incredible nurses who show up every day, often in the face of great personal sacrifice, to deliver comfort, dignity and healing to those in need.

There are moments in a nurse’s life that stay with you forever. Twice, during international travel in the early 2000s, I responded to in-flight medical emergencies. Later, in 2021, I was able to help my MLA colleague in the middle of committee meeting.

Thanks to my nursing training, I was able to help save lives midair. One of those individuals still treats me like a daughter, and their family’s gratitude reminds me everyday why I chose this path.

These moments, and countless others, taught me that nursing is more than a profession. It is a calling rooted in compassion, courage and deep human understanding.

Nurses across the province and country are doing this same type of work every day, saving hundreds and thousands of lives by providing exceptional care. They deserve our recognition, support and respect.

Our government recognizes the invaluable role nurses play and is committed to ensuring they are supported, respected and empowered. We’re advancing initiatives such as implementing minimum nurse-to-patient ratios to reduce burnout and improve outcomes, fostering safer, more inclusive workplaces and removing barriers for internationally educated nurses to join our healthcare workforce more easily.

To all registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, registered psychiatric nurses and nurse practitioners across B.C. and Canada: thank you. Your resilience, your heart and your unwavering commitment to others inspire us all.

From one nurse to another, and on behalf of a grateful province — Happy National Nursing Week. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do.
