R.W. Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous reopens after peaceful blockade
SICAMOUS, B.C. — The R.W. Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous reopened one day after a peaceful blockade began.
DriveBC reported that the stretch of Highway 1 through Sicamous reopened shortly before 6:00 p.m. Tuesday (May 13).
The blockade on the Sicamous Narrows crossing was initiated by Splatsin and Splatsin Development Corporation at around 10:00 a.m. Monday. The protesters said contractors hired by the province to carry out the R.W. Bruhn Bridge replacement project were excluding Indigenous contractors and workers. AECON-Emil Anderson GP was awarded a $136-million contract for a portion of the project predicted to cost $260 million in total.
As of publication, Splatsin has not issued a statement since traffic resumed.
