KAMLOOPS — Nearly 200 wildfires have already been reported across British Columbia since the start of wildfire season on April 1.

The Kamloops Fire Centre currently lists two wildfires, both considered under control. The majority of active wildfires are in the northeast portion of the province, but with summer weather arriving in the River City, those enjoying nature around Kamloops are being asked to remain cautious in the dry conditions.

“It’s pretty important for the public right now to be thinking of fire smarting ahead of the season. There are great resources on the firesmart.ca website and you can find different things to make sure you are keeping in check around your house,” said Cassidy Martin, BCWS Fire Information Officer.

The BC Wildfire Service is reminding people to use the BCWS phone app to help report new wildfires, which allows photos to be sent in with the written information. BCWS is fully staffed ahead of the summer season, with all crews reporting back this month. Ahead of the May long weekend, campfires are still permitted within the Kamloops Fire Centre.

“Right now in the Kamloops Fire Centre, we don’t have a campfire ban. We are just encouraging the public to enjoy their campfires but make sure they are doing it safely,” said Martin “There are quite a few different safety precautions they can have in place when they do have a campfire, such as making sure it’s in a rock ring or a fire pit.”
