Former Kamloops MLA Charbonneau dies

KAMLOOPS — A former Kamloops MLA has died.

Art Charbonneau was first elected in the 1991 B.C. election, when the Mike Harcourt-led NDP swept the Social Credit Party from power.

Charbonneau served a single five-year term, but Harcourt employed him in several key cabinet positions, including Transport and Highways, Forests and Education.

The NDP won re-election in 1996, but Charbonneau opted not to run again and was succeeded by Cathy McGregor.

In recent years, he had been living on Vancouver Island with his wife Alice, who passed away in 2023.

According to an obituary posted online, Charbonneau died on April 25 after recently suffering a stroke.

His family remembered him as curious, intellectual and a doting grandfather to three grandchildren.

Art Charbonneau was 85 years old.
