KAMLOOPS – Dozens of people gathered along Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops Saturday (May 10) morning to rally against proposed cuts to the Kamloops Thompson School District (SD73) budget brought on by increased costs.

It was organized by the District Parent’s Advisory Council (DPAC), which has been calling for more provincial funding after SD73 approved the elimination of 70 full time equivalent positions to address a $5.8-million deficit in the 2025-26 budget.

“We’ve been working so hard as parents to get the word out about how desperate the situation is for our children. To see that there are so many people here today. It’s so heartwarming to know that everyone realizes this is such an important issue right now, ” said SD73 DPAC Chair, Bonnie McBride.

McBride says the cuts to programs and jobs – primarily affecting support staff who are represented by CUPE – will impact the most vulnerable children and put pressure on a workforce that is already burnt out.

“We cannot lose hundreds of educational staff across this province and then hope they come back in a couple of years,” she said. “We need an influx of money so that districts can reexamine how we’re going to deliver education next year.:

SD73 Trustee Cole Hickson was present Saturday, though he told CFJC Today he was not attending on behalf of the School District. He did say that the district’s funding is not fully within their control.

“If you look at the City of Kamloops, they’ve raised taxes by 7.4 per cent, while the TNRD has raised taxes by 5.9 per cent. We don’t have that ability, Hickson said. “We’ve had to make do with what we have.”

“It’s been extremely painful for all of us, especially the parents and the students who are going through these cuts right now.”

Saturday’s rally in Kamloops is one of many being held across B.C., with DPAC representatives set to take part in a larger rally outside the BC Legislature later this month. At the Kamloops rally, DPAC was also collecting letters and signatures in support of its petition that is plans to deliver to Premier David Eby while in Victoria.
