KAMLOOPS — Workers at the A&W restaurant in Valleyview have ratified their inaugural contract, making them the first in Canada to unionize, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

In a statement, IBEW says 20 employees at the restaurant located on the East Trans Canada Highway voted to join the union, and that an “overwhelming” 90 per cent of them ratifying their first collective agreement this week.

It called the move a “groundbreaking achievement for labour rights in Canada,” as it marks “a powerful milestone for fast food workers nationwide.”

“This historic first in Kamloops shows what’s possible when workers stand together,” said Brian Andrews of IBEW Local 993. “These 20 courageous employees are paving the way for others in the industry to follow.”

While details about the agreement are not immediately available, IBEW said workers will benefit from enhanced workplace safety, increased job security, greater respect on the job and a “real voice” in workplace decisions.

The agreement will also see the launch of a joint initiative called the Pathways Program where the employer and union will provide funding for employees in a post-secondary education field of their choice.

“This program reflects a shared commitment to opportunity, empowerment and career advancement for entry-level workers,” the IBEW statement added.

In an emailed response to CFJC after workers voted to unionize in Nov. 2023, a company spokesperson said they will respect the union process.

“We care very much about our employees and strive for a strong culture of mutual respect. In every instance we try to do what’s right, create open lines of communication and build a safe and welcoming work environment,” the company statement said.

“This is a new situation for us, but we will respect the union process.”

This first-of-its-kind announcement follows that of the Sephora store at Aberdeen Mall in Kamloops, where workers were also the first in Canada to unionize back in 2022.
