KAMLOOPS – Tuesday evening (May 6), a vigil was held at McDonald Park for the victims of the Vancouver Lapu Lapu Day tragedy. The deaths of 11 people and injuries to more than 20 have sparked a period of mourning for the Filipino community across the world and in Kamloops.

“To the Filipino community, we see that everyone is united as one because Filipinos are very resilient. We are tested as Filipinos, we are brave enough to face the tragedy,” said Jane Boramayo, the Vice President of the Filipino Canadian Association of Kamloops and District (FILCAN Kamloops)

Attendees were asked to bring flowers and candles to the event. Members of the community were allowed to speak on the tragedy of this occasion.

“It’s so touching that people came to remember those who were victims of the tragedy. I’m happy to see that some people who were not talking before are talking now. This is a time of unity,” said Bong Camillo, Director at FILCAN Kamloops.

A message of hope board was placed out so those who attended could send messages to families of the victims.

“We’re here to support them in any way that we can, we pray for their recovery and the seriously injured and their families as well,” said Melissa Hurst, treasurer of FILCAN Kamloops.

Despite the tragedy of the recent events, the community remains positive and hopes this can bring even more strength to the Filipino community in Kamloops and beyond.
