KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents who have signed up for Voyent Alert! notifications shouldn’t panic if their phones go off Thursday (May 8).

The City of Kamloops will issue a test alert at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, meaning residents who have downloaded the Voyent Alert! app will receive either an email, phone call or text notification.

“If an evacuation alert or order is put in place due to flood, wildfire, or critical incident, this system will be a vital way of alerting and updating the public,” a statement from the City of Kamloops said. “If used, the notification will include important information about the event and instructions on what action, if any, is required.”

“As some devices automatically offload unused apps, registered app users are encouraged to verify that the app is active on their devices. Residents are also encouraged to open their Voyent Alert! app or log in to their account to ensure their locations are positioned accurately.”

The Voyent Alert! app can be downloaded from the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android. It is used by several local communities to relay emergency information, including the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD).

The TNRD will be issuing its own test alert for residents in electoral areas at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 9.

“The TNRD uses Voyent Alert! to share evacuation orders, alerts, and related emergency notices. Having this alert system in place ensures that residents have access to trusted, timely, and accurate information during an emergency,” the TNRD statement said.

“Additionally, the TNRD also uses Voyent Alert! to issue notices for its 11 Community Water Systems. We encourage water system customers to subscribe to receive timely notices as well.”
