KAMLOOPS — Nearly two dozen cats were brought to the BC SPCA shelter in Kamloops after their owner passed away.

The SPCA says 83 Persian-mix cats were brought in after they were contacted by the family of the deceased. Of the animals surrendered, 20 were brought to Kamloops while 63 were sent to Surrey.

According to Layla Gilhooly, manager of the BC SPCA Surrey animal centre, many of the cats were extremely matted and required urgent shaves, while most of them were underweight. A few of them had broken canine teeth and gingivitis.

Additionally, all the cats are being treated for giardia and roundworm.

“Some of the cats also have varying degrees of upper respiratory infection,” Gilhooly says in a news release issued Tuesday (May 6). “Some of the cats are on antibiotics to clear up these infections. We are monitoring a few others to see if they recover by themselves. If their symptoms worsen, we will be taking them to a veterinary clinic for further treatment.”

The SPCA says some of the cats will require further socialization before they will be available for adoption.
