CLEARWATER and ASHCROFT, B.C. — The Village of Ashcroft and District of Clearwater have received millions of dollars to purchase and install water meters.

The B.C. government announced nearly $50 million in provincial funding will go to 19 rural and First Nations communities to install almost 15,000 new automated water meters.

Of that funding, the Village of Ashcroft received $2.7 million to install or replace 860 water meters while the District of Clearwater received $2.4 million to install or replace 870 of the devices.

Additionally, the City of Revelstoke received nearly $4.5 million to install or replace 3,720 water meters and the Village of Valemount received $1.4 million to install or replace 680.

In a new release issued Tuesday (May 6), the province says the meters are part of a pilot program to help small communities and local water suppliers track and manage water usage and mitigate drought impacts. The move is expected to save up to 1.5 billion litres of water.

“Drinking water is an incredibly precious resource. Small and rural communities in B.C. face higher financial and management capacity challenges, and water metering helps communities identify leaks, conserve drinking water, and keep costs down for businesses and residents,” Brittny Anderson, B.C.’s Minister of State for Local Governments and Rural Communities, states.

The province adds the pilot program will also include research that will study the benefits, challenges and opportunities with water metering in small communities.
