KAMLOOPS — It’s been one year since a fire ripped through St. Andrew’s on the Square, leaving the historic building in need of extensive restoration.

The oldest public building in Kamloops, St. Andrew’s on the Square is well on its way back to its former glory, with the restoration phase of the project now complete. When the fire broke out, Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were able to quickly knock down the flames, allowing precious antiques inside to be saved.

“We were lucky the 17 pews, cases full of artifacts, we were very lucky, the organ that was original to the building is still all safe, and really well cleaned and restored and ready to go. But floors, walls, water damage did rip apart a lot of St. Andrew’s on the inside, so these items are back and ready,” said Julia Cyr, Kamloops Museum Supervisor.

The restoration plan focuses on keeping the historical charm of the old church, while also adding modern necessities like high speed internet to improve the usage of the community space for weddings and other celebrations.

“And we want this building to be animated for arts, culture and heritage groups,” said Cyr. “We want to see people back in and so construction will begin this summer and the hope, the ambitious hope is that we can open it by the end of this year. And I think it will come together really beautifully for everybody.”
