Environment Canada data shows Kamloops area was warmer and wetter in April

KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada says it was a warmer and wetter April than usual in the Kamloops area.

Meteorologist Colin Fong says the average temperature during the month was 10.7 C, about one degree higher than the usual 9.9 C.

“To maybe express that in a different way, the average day time high temperatures came out to about 18.4 C, and the normal for that period is 16.5 C,” Fong told CFJC Today. “A couple degrees warmer for the month of April compared to what is normally expected.”

Fong also said the Kamloops area saw 14.6 mm of precipitation in April, adding that was a little more than what is considered normal for a typical April.

“The normal for the month of April is 13.2 mm, so really we’re only talking about maybe a millimetre to a millimetre and a half difference,” he said.

“What’s interesting though is that most of that precipitation fell down at the very beginning of the month. After that, it was a fairly quiet month but it ended up equalling out to a normal month.”

As for the warm spell to start the month of May, Fong says while temperatures are expected to hit the high 20s once again Friday (May 2), today it likely won’t set any records.

“As warm as it is, its not exactly challenging our daily records for May 1 and May 2,” Fong said. “For example, the daily record for May 1 is 30.5 C, and for May 2 its 30.4 C.”

Environment Canada data shows the mercury in Kamloops topped out at 27.5 C on Thursday.
