Kamloops-Thompson School District to eliminate more than 40 CUPE positions due to budget issues
KAMLOOPS — Details of the Kamloops Thompson School District’s plan to balance its 2025-206 budget are becoming more clear. The union representing support staff in the district says administration is eliminating more than 40 CUPE positions. The district made the decision due to a $5.8-million budget deficit. Library assistants and high school science assistants account for more than half of those cuts.
“Library assistants help support students in their literary goals and ensure the smooth and seamless operation of libraries. Those people are just gone and those connections students had with people in their building are gone,” said Dawn Armstrong, the president of CUPE Local 3500.
The job cuts also affect school maintenance and janitorial staff, who account for 22 of the cuts. Armstrong believes these cuts could affect student health and safety.
