KAMLOOPS — The Lac Du Bois Grasslands Protected Area has new signage after a collaboration between multiple groups. The organizations, including the Kamloops Naturalist Club, Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, BC Parks and the Grassland Conservation Council, provided extensive information about Secwepemc use and stewardship of the region.

The signage includes many key Secwepemctsin words describing place names, plants and animals.

“Having this trail opened up and the signs updated will allow people to explore and better understand the grasslands. That’s really what we want to see — not only as these nonprofit organizations but as educators,” said Cristi Gordon, one of the designers of the Lac Du Bois signage.

The goal of updated signs is to educate those who are on the trail about the land they stand on.

“I’m overjoyed to be sharing the beautiful signage, the collaborative efforts, showcasing our partners, our language and culture departments and natural resource department,” said Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc.

The signs include information and facts about the grassland ecosystem.

“I felt fortunate just being a member of the Grasslands Conservation Council and having the opportunity to help design the signs — to do that step-by-step process from the initial consultation and all the meetings with chief and council at Tk’emlúps,” said Gordon.

The signage allows the Tk’emlúps community to celebrate its history on the grassland, allowing members to look toward the future of conservation efforts.

“These have been our ancestral lands since time immemorial for thousands of years. However, we have always been a welcoming community and we always want to embrace those who respect the place in which we all want to live and play,” said Casimir.

The four signs are located throughout the area and each sign gives a unique perspective on the grasslands.
