KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say a woman experiencing emotional distress was rescued from the chilly waters of the Thompson River Sunday night (April 27).

In a news release, spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says members were called to the river in the area of Riverside Park East at about 8:30 p.m. Witnesses reported a woman in the water beneath the rail bridge near Sandman Centre.

“When police arrived on scene, they called out to the woman, but she did not engage and instead, began to float downstream,” said Cpl. Evelyn. “Fortunately, they were able to quickly flag down a civilian in a jet boat, who took them out to where the woman was floating, further into the main current.”

Once they got close enough, the Mounties pulled the woman out of the water and into the boat. She was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and treated in hospital.
