COLLINS: Whatever happened to fiscal responsibility?

Apr 27, 2025 | 6:00 AM

I ALWAYS ADMIRED MY DAD’S ability to manage money.

He would always be able to make sure we had good food and other necessities as required. If we had to borrow money for something major, he would never miss a payment. He was always of the opinion that if you couldn’t afford it, you didn’t get it.

Sadly, the apple fell a long way from the tree. I’ve always been an impulse spender. Amazon one-click and I are joined at the hip.

But there is absolutely none worse than government. They spend and spend, often with no other reason than trying to bluff us into thinking they’re doing something positive.

We have to bring things into line. As we prepare for tomorrow’s election and look at all the billions promised, I can’t help but think, “The reality is not that we’re taxed too much, it’s that we are not taxed enough.”

We can only make headway if we reduce our expenses and pay more in taxes. A bitter pill, but it will pay off later.

The Lottery Corporation has this great saying “know your limit, play within it.” We would all do well to pay more attention to those words.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
