New FireSmart assessments on hold in Kamloops after spike in requests due to new rebate program

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is temporarily not taking applications for a new rebate that incentivizes the removal of cedars and junipers because of “an overwhelming response” from residents.

FireSmart Coordinator Kathleen Cahoon says there were around 200 requests made for new FireSmart assessments after the program was launched on Tuesday (April 22).

“We have to get through all those requested assessments before we can open it up for new ones just because we have that $80,000 per program year, so we want to make sure we’re not overcommitting funds for the first year,” Cahoon said.

“If there are still available funds and not everyone is maxing out on the potential $800 back, we will look to reopen it.”

Funding for the first-come, first-served program – which is set to run every year until 2028 – is coming from the City’s Climate Action Fund Reserve. It will offer residents between $150 and $800 if they remove cedars and junipers from their properties.

“Once we get through all of these assessments, we’ll reopen up the request for FireSmart assessments in which case someone from KFR will come out and do your assessment,” Cahoon said. “Just because its on pause right now doesn’t mean that you don’t have a chance to get in.

“If you don’t get in this year, still get your home assessment done because when Jan. 1 hits, you can apply for the rebate. You can be proactive by getting the assessment done once it reopens and then you’re eligible for the next program year.”

Cahoon also said Kamloops Fire Rescue completed 208 FireSmart assessments in all of 2024, up from 87 that were completed in 2023.

“Having 200 assessments in the last three days just goes to show how important this program is and that its much needed in Kamloops,” Cahoon said, noting its “amazing” to see the high level of interest from Kamloopsians for this rebate program.

“In terms of more funding for the program or for other similar incentives, it would be dependent on grant approvals,” Cahoon added, when asked if the budget for this rebate could be increased because of the demand. “I’m actively seeking other grant opportunities.”

“We’re waiting to hear back to see if we’re getting approved for any of these additional funding opportunities.”
