KAMLOOPS — New data from Elections Canada shows the new split Kamloops ridings had similar advance voter turnout to their predecessor.

The data shows that 28,292 registered voters in Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies cast their ballots over four days of advance voting from April 18 to 21, while 25,209 registered voters did so in Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola.

During the 2021 federal election, Elections Canada says 27,838 registered voters in the former Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding cast their ballots during advance voting.

The City of Kamloops was split into two ridings after the new boundaries were proposed by the Electoral Boundary Commission in B.C. in Feb. 2023, and later adopted in Sept. 2023.

In B.C., Elections Canada says there were 1,104,151 advance votes cast this year, a sharp increase from 813,126 in 2021. B.C. was one of three provinces to reach the million mark trailing Ontario with 2,792,881 and Quebec with 1,595,591.

Across the country, Elections Canada says nearly 7.3 million registered voters cast their ballots in advance, a 25 per cent increase from the 5.8 million in 2021. The majority of votes – 2.1 million – were cast on Easter Monday, with Good Friday – 2.05 million – a close second

Election day is Monday, April 28, with polls in Kamloops and area operating from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
