14th annual Chris Rose Walk for Autism fundraising for new communication board

KAMLOOPS — A key fundraiser for the Chris Rose Therapy Centre is coming up this Saturday (April 26). The 14th annual Chris Rose Walk for Autism is aiming to raise enough money to buy a new communication board for the centre in north Kamloops.

Every year, money raised by the walk is used to support programs, and equipment purchases for the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism. The centre currently has around 36 families who rely on its services, including Tammy Chabot and her son Matthew, and they’re hoping to add a new communication tool.

“We are looking at this communication board. If anyone has seen the one at Riverside Park, this is a similar idea,” Tammy Chabot told CFJC Today. “We would like to invest in one here. So this piece of equipment is around $7,500, and our fundraising goal for the year is around $10,000.”

While the centre does receive grants and funding from the province, it is not fully funded. In order to cover the rest of its operating costs, the non-profit needs to fundraise.

“The walk is a really great event for all of us because for one thing we get to join up with the people we don’t see every day her. Also we have past families who join us every year as well as community members and sponsors,” Chabot added.

“It’s just really exciting to have a chance to see the community come together for a piece of equipment like this.”

Registration opens at 10 a.m., and the walk itself starts at 11 a.m. from the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism. Participants will go around McArthur Island before returning to the centre for a by-donation barbeque lunch.
