KAMLOOPS — The long road towards renovating the fire-damaged Cherry Avenue apartments is nearing completion.

The 42-unit apartment was bought by the Province for almost $13 million in 2023, two years after it was damaged by fire in 2021. It needed renovations and safety upgrades to be completed before it could welcoming new tenants.

Originally, scheduled to open in 2023, the building was faced with multiple delays tied to the former owner, as well as water damage from frozen pipes.

“There is a team in the building fixing it up and we expect in the coming months to have people moving in,” Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said in Kamloops Wednesday.

“We wanted that to happen last year, but of course when you open up walls you can find there are additional challenges, and that work is happening right now.”

Kahlon says the province bought the building with the goal of creating low to moderate income housing in Kamloops.

“That is one building of over 2,100 units that we are investing in Kamloops,” he said. “Kamloops has one of the highest per-capita investments in affordable housing in the province.”
