WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Smoke is expected to be visible from the City of Williams Lake Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) and along Highway 97 over the next week.

The BC Wildfire Service says it will support WLFN with a 100-hectare cultural burn. In a news release issued Tuesday (April 22), the wildfire service says the burn will take place within WLFN Indian Reserve No. 1 from the cemetery, north to Highway 97 and west of Eagleview Drive.

The wildfire service says the goal of the burn is to reduce the wildfire risk to WLFN and the surrounding area and use fire to restore forest health. While the perimeter of the burn will be extinguished at the end of each day, the wildfire service says smoke may remain visible for up to 48 hours.

The burn is expected to begin as early as Wednesday (April 23) and continue periodically until May 2, but ignitions will only proceed if venting and weather conditions are favourable.
