KAMLOOPS — Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Ravi Kahlon attended a closed meeting of Kamloops city council on Wednesday (April 23) morning following an affordable housing announcement.

Kahlon is hoping to discuss the Braun Report with council and Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

“We are going to discuss the special advisors report, we are going to discuss progress or in some cases not much progress on that report and we are also going to talk about affordable housing in the community and how we can continue that work,” Kahlon said. “Two thousand one hundred units of housing is impressive, but it’s not enough. We are going to need to do more and how do we do that together? So, it’s going to be a fulsome conversation.”

Asked if the government is considering putting more pressure on the city to ensure the Kamloops council abides by Braun’s recommendations, Kahlon said the NDP is looking for legislative changes across B.C.

“Ultimately, it’s the public that pays the price for continuous disputes, not following basic protocols, and that is not what we want,” Kahlon said. “Kamloops has a lot of challenges, like other communities, but if you are constantly breaking basic code of ethic rules, it’s hard for you to move forward and address those big challenges. We owe it to our communities to address this really quick and that is what we will be addressing in the meeting this afternoon.”

The meeting was scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Minister Kahlon provided the following statement in an email to CFJC News.

“While it was disappointing that Mayor Hamer-Jackson indicated to me that he would not and did not attend this important discussion, I am encouraged by the council’s ongoing commitment to implementing the Municipal Advisor’s governance recommendations as well as achieving our shared goals of ensuring more people can access homes they can afford in Kamloops. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that Kamloops meets its housing targets and addresses the needs of the community,” reads the statement.
