SD73 DPAC urges trustees to reject budget proposal at next meeting

KAMLOOPS — The SD73 District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) has penned an open letter calling for action from the provincial government and local trustees in the face of budgetary pressures in the education sector.

DPAC has issued five goals for the board, including rejecting the budget proposal set to be in front of the board on Monday night (April 28) during the regular board meeting.

“We absolutely do not want our trustees to approve this budget on Monday night,” said DPAC Chair Bonnie McBride. “This budget does not have the information that we require here in our community to show us that despite the $5.7 million that we think we should have and we don’t, we can take care of our children. We don’t see that in this budget. We need it to be costed by resource, costed by program.”

The DPAC is working in concert with fellow parent advisory councils around the province to apply more pressure, and while it is looking for the local district to stand tall, parents understand it’s also the province that needs to step up to properly support students in British Columbia.

“And the expectation from our province is that school districts will operate on a business model and we cannot operate charter-guaranteed public service on a business model. We can’t balance this budget and provide quality individualized education for every child that they are entitled to here in our communities. It is not possible anymore,” said McBride.

McBride is looking to take the fight along with fellow DPACs to Victoria to have the issue raised in the legislature to the premier, along with the ministers of finance and education.
