CLEARWATER, B.C. — The District of Clearwater is reminding people to be careful after a trio of fires were sparked near the community over the Easter long weekend.

In an update Saturday (April 19) night, the District also said that all of the fires are currently under control.

The two blazes that sparked Saturday were located roughly three kilometres apart, though one was within District boundaries and the other was just outside.

It said the fire just outside of District boundaries was extinguished by the BC Wildfire Service, while the second fire, on Burnell Forest Service Road, was brought under control by crews from the Clearwater Fire Department.

“While some smoke may still be visible in the area, the fire is contained and surrounded by a wet line,” the update said of the second fire. “Fire crews will continue to monitor the site to ensure it remains fully contained.”

The third fire from Friday was extinguished by the property owner shortly after it ignited.

All of the fires are believed to be human caused, though a definitive cause has not yet been determined.

“The cause of all three wildfires remains under investigation, and we will share additional details when they become available from the appropriate agencies,” the District said in its statement.

“We want to extend a sincere thank you to our Clearwater Fire Department team, the BC Wildfire Service, and the local residents who remain alert and responsive to fire risks.

The District is also reminding people to call 911 if they see smoke or flames. A reminder as well that you can report a wildfire by dialing *5555 on your cell phone.

“Your quick reporting can make a critical difference in how fast crews are able to respond,” the District of Clearwater statement said.

“Let’s all continue to stay aware, stay safe, and support one another during this early start to wildfire season.”
