Fire crews responding to pair of wildfires near Clearwater

CLEARWATER, B.C. — The District of Clearwater says crews from its local fire department and the BC Wildfire Service are responding to a pair of fires burning in close proximity of each other Saturday (April 19) afternoon.

It says the two blazes are roughly three kilometres apart and located just off the Road 2 Forest Service Road, though one is within the District of Clearwater boundaries while the other is just outside.

“These fires are burning at Rank 2-3 intensity, meaning they are surface fires with moderate flame and spread,” a District of Clearwater news release said.

“In addition, a third wildfire that ignited within District boundaries yesterday was successfully extinguished by the property owner.”

The District of Clearwater said no homes are believed to be at risk as both fires are burning uphill “which is helping reduce the threat to populated areas.”

“We ask the public to stay away from these areas to allow our local fire crews and BC Wildfire Service personnel to focus on their critical response efforts without interference,” the District statement added.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available. If conditions change we will notify the public through official channels, including Voyent Alert.”

The fires are believed to be human caused, though a definitive cause has not yet been determined.

This story will be updated if more information is known.
