Kamloops building sector seeing similar permit value, far fewer new housing units compared to 2024
KAMLOOPS — At the quarter point of 2025, construction value and permits issued in the Kamloops building sector are nearly identical to the same time frame in 2024. However, the number of new housing units is drastically down.
New numbers released by the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show nearly $47.5 million in permit activity as of March 2025 — slightly down from the near $48.8 million as of March 2024.
While the construction value for the first quarter of 2024 and 2025 are nearly identical, the activity in commercial and residential projects have traded roles. Year-to-date, the Kamloops building sector has seen nearly $26 million in commercial construction value as of March 2025, up from the near $5 million recorded at the same time last year. On the opposite end, nearly $15.5 million in residential construction value was recorded throughout the first three months of 2025, down from the near $41.6 million recorded as of March 2024.
Permits are slightly down. The city says 196 permits were issued throughout the first three months of 2025 compared to the 200 permits issued throughout the first three months of 2024.
