KAMLOOPS — This week, the BC Cancer Foundation launched a $5-million fundraising campaign aimed at equipping the Kamloops cancer centre.

The Kamloops cancer centre is scheduled to open to patients in 2028, with construction expected to begin this summer on the Westlands site of the Royal Inland Hospital campus.

“We have launched the $5 million campaign. I have incredible confidence that we will reach it and as the cancer centre is built, there will be other needs and we will be there to support it, forever,” said Sarah Roth, BC Cancer Foundation President and CEO. “That is what we do. Whenever BC Cancer asks us for help whether it is with state of the art technology, research, clinical trials, patient supportive care, we as the BC Cancer Foundation want to be there to mobilize community to give back.”

Absent from the plans for the Kamloops centre is a PET-CT scanner, meaning patients will be required to travel to Kelowna or Vancouver for that portion of their treatment. The BC Cancer Foundation has been informed they will not be asked to help fundraise for the piece of equipment in Kamloops.

“We have been informed that PET-CT will not be at the BC Cancer Kamloops. There is a PET-CT at BC Cancer Kelowna that we as a foundation fundraised for a several years ago and there are two PET-CTs at BC Cancer Vancouver. And so that is the knowledge I have,” added Roth.
