More Kamloops-area voting opportunities now available with federal election day two weeks away

KAMLOOPS — Canadians are now able to vote at more locations as a number of different polling opportunities are getting underway with election day exactly two weeks away.

There are polling stations set up at more than 100 universities and colleges across Canada, with these campus polling stations open to all Canadians and not just students.

There are polling stations set up at the Lecture Hall at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops and in room M067 at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) in Merritt.

Elections Canada says — for the most part — these campus polling stations will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. until Wednesday (April 16). The polling station at NVIT will only be open on Monday and Tuesday.

Elections Canada also says there will also be other voting opportunities for people who are incarcerated and for people in acute care facilities. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces can also vote at the military poll set up for their base or unit until this Saturday.

Advance polls will then open in all communities between Friday and Monday this weekend, April 18 to 22. They say people should check their voter information cards or use the Voter Information Service to find their polling stations.

Until now, people have been able to vote by special ballot at any local Elections Canada office. They’ll still be able to do so until 6:00 p.m. on April 22. That date is also the deadline for people to apply to vote by mail.

While registered voters were expected to get their voter information card in the mail by last Friday, April 11, Elections Canada said Monday people “should” receive their cards in the mail before advance polling days.

“There have been some delays, but efforts are being made to rectify early this week so voter information cards are in electors’ hands before Friday and the start of advance polls,” spokesperson James Hale told CFJC Today.

“The delays only affect a very small number of electoral districts”

Hale also said people can check or update their voter registration here before April 22 or register when they go to vote in person.

As for candidates, there are five each in the two Kamloops ridings – Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola and Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies. There are seven candidates in Cariboo-Prince George, which includes the City of Williams Lake and the District of 100 Mile House.
