Merritt crews battle Saturday night structure fire at abandoned building

MERRITT — Details are limited by Merritt Fire Rescue crews were called to a blaze at an abandoned building along Midday Valley Road Saturday (April 12) night.

Video from the scene shared on social media between 10:15 p.m. and 10:35 p.m. Saturday night shows the building fully engulfed in flames.

This latest blaze comes less than a year after a fire at two other abandoned buildings at the site in June of last year. The buildings are not owned by the City, which said last year that the owners are responsible for clearing up the site.

While it’s not clear what sparked this latest blaze, though reports to CFJC Today are that the BC Wildfire Service was also called in to assist.
