COLLINS: Time to put priority on our issues
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, all attention has been focused on the big white elephant to the south of us and the man who would be king who has upended the entire world order, creating chaos. At the same time, we need to take this opportunity to stare at our navel, examine our future goals and make a plan to reach them.
There can be no doubt that those plans must include the United States. We have hitched ourselves to that wagon and they are too powerful to ignore. But we have to look at our leadership and choose the person who has the determination and skill level to match up with the man in the big white house.
We have two such candidates who represent two different viewpoints. However, with so much attention on US matters, I would wager money that most Canadians don’t know the issues vital to avoid being swallowed up. With the election a couple of weeks away, I was floored to find out that on one day last week, there was not one national story about our election. Not one.
Two weeks is not a long time to study the issues and be able to make an informed decision but would help more than hinder. We can’t make progress if all we do is let someone else do all the work. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take these two weeks, read and view material, and when you go to the polls, vote with the confidence that you are voting for someone you think is trustworthy and will lead us forward, not backward.
