CSRD looking for properties in Blind Bay, Sorrento to host wildfire training exercise

SHUSWAP — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) wants to hear from homeowners in Blind Bay and Sorrento who are willing to host a wildfire training exercise on their property next month.

The CSRD says firefighters will gather in the two communities on May 10 “for a critical wildfire interface training exercise.” They note the Blind Bay and Sorrento area is an ideal training location given the “significant number of wildland urban interface areas.”

“All 13 CSRD fire departments, plus crews from Salmon Arm, Golden, Armstrong and Sicamous will work in task forces to simulate a large interface fire that has spread into the community,” the CSRD said in a news release.

“We know from experience that when embers from a nearby wildfire drop into a community, they create spot fires. Small spot fires can grow quickly and cause the most damage when they land on or near flammable items around the home.”

The CSRD says there will be a “heavy presence” of emergency vehicles in Blind Bay and Sorrento when this exercise is scheduled to take place. As part of the exercise, they note crews will be trained on patrolling, communicating and actioning spot fires.

“We need a couple of homes in a variety of neighbourhoods to simulate extinguishing a spot fire,” the CSRD said. “We flow some water from hoses to make this realistic but it is usually only on lawns and treed areas.”

“By volunteering your property, you not only contribute to vital firefighter training but also gain firsthand insights on how to safeguard your home from wildfire.”

People who are interested in volunteering their property for this training exercise, or those who need more information are being asked to contact Deputy Regional Fire Chief Len Yourden by email or by phone at at 250-832-8194.
