KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP confirms there will be an increased police presence at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) for the next few days because of a potential threat to the Kamloops campus.

In a statement Thursday (April 10), Kamloops RCMP also asked people to remain vigilant and to be aware of their surroundings while on campus.

Police say they were told about the unconfirmed threat just before 1:00 p.m. on March 26. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said the RCMP’s General Investigation Support Team (GIST) and the Serious Crime Unit (SCU) have been investigating.

“[RCMP] have been actively investigating the nature and source of the threat to determine the reliability while being mindful that threats can be made to create disruption and to achieve notoriety,” Napier said.

In a statement, TRU told CFJC News that while there is no indication that the threat is credible, they are taking it seriously. TRU also said the additional security measures were implemented “out of an abundance of caution.”

TRU also said in letter to all faculty, staff and students that they are “confident that this matter is being handled by the RCMP in close collaboration with TRU in a way that ensures public safety.”

In her Thursday statement, Napier also said that Kamloops RCMP is working with TRU Community Safety and Emergency Management Risk and Safety Services.

“As part of a combined response, we are working with TRU Safety Services to have an increased presence in and around the campus over the next few days,” Napier said.

People are being asked to report any suspicious activity to the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
