TRU taking security precautions following threatening letter; RCMP investigating

KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University has sent out a letter to all faculty, staff and students regarding a potential threat to the Kamloops campus.

“We want to make you aware that a threatening letter has been received by Thompson Rivers University. The letter, which contains a suggestion of potential acts of violence on the TRU Kamloops campus, was immediately turned over to the RCMP.”

TRU was contacted by CFJC News for comment, and states in an email, “At this time, there is no indication that the threat is credible, but TRU and the RCMP are taking it seriously and have implemented additional security measures on our Kamloops campus out of an abundance of caution.”

In the letter, the university says it is actively reviewing campus safety protocols, and an increase in campus security, including the presence of RCMP, may be seen through the coming days.

The university notes that exams will continue as scheduled this week. Additionally, TRU syas it has made support services available for anybody feeling unsettled or anxious.

“We will continue to provide updates as needed. Thank you for supporting one another and for contributing to a safe, respectful university environment,” concluded the letter.
