KAMLOOPS — Wildfire season unofficially kicked off this weekend after a grass fire was put out in Strathcona Park Sunday (April 6). While there is no official word on what caused the grass fire, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) officials believe this is the beginning of the dreaded wildfire season.

“There’s no definitive cause at this time. Fire inspectors are still on the scene doing their investigation. Right now, given that there’s no cause, it just makes everybody much more aware and puts everybody on edge knowing that fire season is right around the corner. We (KFR) would consider it here now,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Cail of Kamloops Fire Rescue.

The smell of smoke and signs of fire are something everybody should be looking out for.

“We always recommend just calling 9-1-1 right away — it’s better to have us responding. Then, if it’s not that big of a deal and one apparatus can handle it, we’ll just turn back the other apparatus and send them home. It’s better to send us early, get us going, get some eyes on it, get an understanding of what’s going on,” said Cail

Kamloops emergency services are used to the wildfire season and are prepared for this year.

“Every area of town gets the same response, gets the same attention. Well, we’re going to be on high alert for, you know, the next couple of months. Everybody can rest easy. (BC) Wildfire’s resourced up, KFR’s resourced up. We’re trained up, ready to go. We’ll do everything we can to look after the city,” said Cail.
