COLLINS: Chalk one up for Kamloops

Apr 6, 2025 | 6:00 AM

OVER THE YEARS, Kamloops has been seen as a poor second cousin to Kelowna. We are still a mining and mill town, still a dusty city without the beauty of our southern neighbour.

So it was nice to get some backhanded good news last week that Kamloops is considered one of the best-positioned cities in the country to withstand the effects of Donald Trump’s tariffs, expected to tip the global economy upside down.

I THINK that’s good news. The study, done by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, was featured on CTV News. Local Chamber officials say our businesses are not expected to be hit as hard as many others by the tariffs. Kamloops’ efforts to diversify its economy are paying off.

Before you plan your big celebration, however, don’t think we won’t be hit by the tariffs. Maybe not as hard as some areas, but we will face some hardships before this mess is cleared up. Nonetheless, it’s nice to have something to smile about for a change. Maybe even some council members and business leaders can put a smile on their faces.
