Voting underway in Sun Peaks by-election

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — It’s by-election day in Sun Peaks as residents head to the polls to elect a new councillor Saturday (April 5).

The by-election is being held to fill the vacant seat left after former councillor Rob O’Toole resigned to launch his bid for mayor. O’Toole will succeed Al Raine — who died last December after a battle with ALS — as the second-ever mayor of Sun Peaks.

There are four candidates — Dave Burnham, Katherine Campbell, Brian Gillespie and Alice Muirhead — running for O’Toole’s old council seat, as he was required under provincial legislation to step down ahead of the by-election.

People will be able to vote at the Sun Peaks Centre between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Saturday. The successful candidate will serve as councillor for about a year and half, with the next municipal election in B.C. scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026.

In a statement, the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality said it will be registrating all electors at the time they come to vote.

“All Electors (Resident and Non-Resident) will be required to produce two documents, at least one of which must contain the applicant’s signature, providing evidence of their identity and place of residency,” the statement said.

“Non-Resident Property Electors must also provide proof of ownership of property and written consent of a majority of the property owners if there is more than one owner that they are entitled to register the jointly owned property.”
