MERRITT — Police in Merritt say a pedestrian was killed in a crash on the Coquihalla Highway early Thursday (April 3) morning.

In a news release, police say they were called to Highway 5 near Kane Valley Road, south of Merritt city limits, around 5:15 a.m. this morning to reports that a man had been hit by a vehicle.

“Despite lifesaving efforts, a male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said. “The vehicle involved was unable to avoid the collision, and remained on scene. No criminality is suspected.”

While the northbound lanes of the Coquihalla were closed for several hours, the highway was reopened to traffic around 11:30 a.m.
