TRU receives $1.7M to train 260 firefighters, 18 local response groups
KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University (TRU) received nearly $1.7 million in federal funding to train up to 260 wildland firefighters over a three-year period.
Along with the individual training, TRU says the funding from Natural Resources Canada will support the training of up to 18 local response agencies, such as rural fire departments.
In a news release, TRU says by removing the cost barriers and providing advanced training, communities outside of large, urban centres will be able to meet the evolving demands of wildfire response.
Additionally, TRU says the funding will enable applied research that will be conducted as part of TRU Wildfire. The university says bridging research and practice strengthens local and regional wildfire response efforts.
