Gas prices expected to drop about 15 cents due to repeal of carbon tax

KAMLOOPS – With the B.C. government announcing the repeal of the provincial consumer carbon tax by April 1, Canadians are expected to get a big break at the pump.

“Canadians can expect gasoline prices to probably roll back close to 15 cents per litre or so,” GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick de Haan, told CFJC Today. “While the federal carbon tax amounts to 17.6 cents a litre, the wholesale price of gasoline is up, and the price of oil is up. It may offset a small amount of the expected relief that we will see here come April 1.”

Those prices are expected to be implemented across gas stations around Kamloops and the surrounding areas. The B.C. government announced on Monday, it will be eliminating the carbon tax.

Prices in Kamloops currently sit around $1.61 per litre. While the legislation is already in effect, it may take retailers some adjustment to their software before prices start going down — while some retailers may not choose to lower prices at all.

“For some stations, they may be able to automate that to take effect at 12:01 a.m. For other stations, they may need to manually update this, so some stations may take several to twelve hours to get the software rewritten,” said de Haan. “I would expect this to be noticeable fairly early on, but it will vary retailer to retailer.”

Gasoline is not the only fuel that is dropping as diesel prices will also see a big decrease to the tune of a 20-cent-per-litre rollback.

The biggest question that remains is how long these prices will last with the federal election right around the corner. For now, a lot of relief is coming to Canadians at the pump.
