Federal election may be turning into a one-issue vote: TRU associate professor

KAMLOOPS — Long before the latest federal election was called on the weekend, opposition parties — and the governing Liberals, for that matter — had been campaigning on a long list of priorities.

From the carbon tax, to the current housing crisis and everything in between, politicians were gearing up for an election as the Tories attempted unsuccessfully to bring down the Trudeau government. But with Mark Carney now in place and a looming trade war with the country’s closest ally, next month’s vote may become a single-issue election.

“Who is best to navigate this? Canadians are looking at this as a serious election issue,” said Robert Hanlon, TRU Political Science associate professor. “It’s kind of dominating the more local concerns and a lot of those [messages] which we might have heard a couple months ago around crime or the housing crisis — this kind of stuff is taking a back-burner to the trade war and again this annexation of Canada.”
