KAMLOOPS — Kamloops is now split into two federal ridings, both ostensibly held by the opposition Conservatives. Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola, where incumbent Frank Caputo will run and Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies (KSCR), with incumbent Mel Arnold.

Arnold was originally sworn in back in 2015, serving three terms as a member of the official opposition. Despite his 10 years of experience in Ottawa, for Kamloops voters living east of Sixth Avenue, it’s a chance for a first impression.

“It’s about a 50 per cent change in population from the old riding,” Arnold told CFJC News from his Kamloops campaign office. “I will use my experience as a three-term member of parliament. [I’m] really looking forward to meeting more of the people of Kamloops. I’ve already met many people over here. I’ve been making lots of trips here. Also to the east end of the riding — it’s a massive riding, 450 kilometres from east end to west end and a very diverse riding.”

The Conservatives have been running on a ‘four pillar’ platform, complete with the removal of the carbon tax, addressing housing, tackling crime and dealing with the budget deficit.

“We have a Canadian election to run. I just spoke about the four pillars in our platform. That is what we are focused on. We have to have a strong Canada. We can’t control what happens south of the border. Let’s control what we can up here. Get our interprovincial trade barriers taken down so we can trade inter-provincially, expand our markets to other markets overseas,” said Arnold.

Other confirmed candidates within the KSCR riding include Michael Henry of the People’s Party and Owen Madden of the Greens.

Election day is Monday, April 28.
