Iain Currie files paperwork to run under the Liberal banner in Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola

KAMLOOPS — All expectations are that Prime Minster Mark Carney will drop the writ this weekend, plunging Canada into a federal election campaign.

That has local riding associations across the country gearing up ahead of a possible late April or early May election day.

The Liberals in Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola have a familiar name eyeing their nomination, as a former Green Party candidate in the past two elections has filed his paperwork to run under the Liberal banner in 2025.

“At this particular point in time that is where I want to be and want I think Canada needs,” Currie told CFJC Today. “My values haven’t changed, my politics haven’t changed. The world has changed and I think the Liberal Party is the party that can best respond to what is going on.”

Currie is set to take on the incumbent and only confirmed candidate in the race, Conservative MP Frank Caputo. The two know each other well as they worked as Crown Prosecutors. While they consider themselves friends, they have different ideas for the future of Canada.

“What do we need right at this moment? Do we need the fear mongering? Do we need the pettiness and irrationality of a Pierre Poilievre led government or do we need the calm rational approach of a proven leader through hard times in Prime Minister Carney?,” added Currie.

While his paperwork is now filed, Currie has not officially been named the Liberal candidate, with others still able to put their names forward to run in Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola.

There is no word on prospective candidates for the NDP and the Green parties in Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola.

Elsewhere, Conservative incumbent MP Mel Arnold is the only known candidate in the riding of Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies riding, which encompasses the eastern portion of Kamloops.
